If you are reading this right now, you have more luxury than someone in Iran could ever hope for right now. If you are watching TV or a video on youtube, updating your status on Facebook, Tweeting, or even texting your friend, you are lucky. If you are safe in your home, and were able to sleep last night without the sounds of screaming from the rooftops, you need to know and understand what is happening to people just like you in Iran right now.

They are not the enemy. They are a people whose election has been stolen. For the first time in a long time, a voice for change struck the youth of Iran, just as it did for many people in the United States only seven months ago. Hossein Mousavi gained the support of millions of people in Iran as a Presidential candidate. He stands for progressiveness. He supports good relations with the West, and the rest of the world. He is supported with fervor as he challenges the oppressive regime of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

On Friday, millions of people waited for hours in line to vote in Iran's Presidential election. Later that night, as votes came in, Mousavi was alerted that he was winning by a two-thirds margin. Then there was a change. Suddenly, it was Ahmadinejad who had 68% of the vote - in areas which have been firmly against his political party, he overwhelmingly won. Within three hours, millions of votes were supposedly counted - the victor was Ahmadinejad. Immediately fraud was suspected - there was no way he could have won by this great a margin with such oppposition. Since then, reports have been coming in of burned ballots, or in some cases numbers being given without any being counted at all. None of this is confirmed, but what happened next seems to do the trick.

The people of Iran took the streets and rooftops. They shout "Death to the dictator" and "Allah o akbar." They join together to protest. Peacefully. The police attack some, but they stay strong. Riots happen, and the shouting continues all night. Text messaging was disabled, as was satellite, and websites which can spread information such as Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and the BBC are blocked in the country. At five in the morning, Arabic speaking soldiers (the people of Iran speak Farsi) stormed a university in the capital city of Tehran. While sleeping in their dormitories, five students were killed. Others were wounded. These soldiers are thought to have been brought in by Ahmadinejad from Lebanon. Today, 192 of the university's faculty have resigned in protest.

Mousavi requested that the government allow a peaceful rally to occur this morning - the request was denied. Many thought that it would not happen. Nevertheless, first a few thousand people showed up in the streets of Tehran. At this point, it is estimated that 1 to 2 million people were there. Mousavi spoke on the top of a car. The police stood by. For a few hours, everything was peaceful. Right now, the same cannot be said. Reports of injuries, shootings, and killings are flooding the internet. Twitter has been an invaluable source - those in Iran who still know how to access it are updating regularly with picture evidence. People are being brutally beaten. Tonight will be another night without rest for so many in Iran no older than I am. Tonight there is a Green Revolution.

One little compliment can make you feel amazing. So give me a compliment, anything in the entire world, even that my shoelaces are pretty. Put this in your journal. And once you get some comments, put that entry in a memory or tag and when you are feeling down, just go to that entry and this will remind you how great you are.

Comments are going to be screened so none of you will know if I'm uber-popular who gets over 100 comments on this or a total loser who doesn't get any.

You guys should do this too so I can compliment you.

Please pass this along to everyone you know

It doesn't matter if you support the war or not. What matters is supporting those men and women who made the choice they were willing to put their lives on the line for our county, your country, every country.

The Sack Lunches

The Sack Lunches

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. I'm glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap, I thought.

Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation. 'Where are you headed?' I asked the soldier seated nearest to me.

"Petawawa. We'll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we're being deployed to Afghanistan ."

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time..

As I reached for my wallet, I overheard soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch. "No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn't be worth five bucks. I'll wait till we get to base."

His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty dollar bill. "'Take a lunch to all those soldiers." She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. "My son was a soldier in Iraq ; it's almost like you are doing it for him."

Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, "Which do you like best - beef or chicken?"

"Chicken" I replied, wondering why she asked.

She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class. "This is your thanks."

After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room. A man stopped me. "I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this." He handed me twenty-five dollars.

Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand, and said, "I want to shake your hand."

Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain's hand. With a booming voice he said, "I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot." I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers.

Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my palm.

When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-five dollars!

Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five dollars. "It will take you some time to reach the base. It will be about time for a sandwich.

"God Bless You."

Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travelers. As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so little...

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

which kinda bums me because I liked the money but also doesn't because I am getting too old for this.

Came home early today since I stayed last night to get stuff finished up (that honestly I could have done today). I was going to go do laundry but it was such a nice day, I took a blanket, put on a sweater and sat out on the balcony for about an hour and a half. Roarke was curled up in my lap and I was listening to my MP3 player. I actually napped for about a half an hour. It was a nice way to recharge.

Of course, I still have to do laundry.

And the douchenozzle that was speeding through the parking lot at the apartment complex needs to knock it the hell off. Seriously-s/he was doing about 30. Luckily there were no kids around playing at the time. I mean the kids I see are careful to not run out into the parking lot to bike ride or skate board but you never know. I wrote down the license plate number and called the office to report them.

Dinner was a chicken breast pounded flat, rolled around a couple of pieces of bacon, a thick slice of Havarti and grilled. Topped with a little fresh pico de gallo and served with steamed broccoli.

I went out and ran a bunch of errands today. Stopped at the library and picked up a couple of books I had on hold. Stopped at the Post Office to buy stamps. sorry those of you that are getting Christmas cards from me-no Christmas stamps-I got the ones you buy at the current price and can use if the price goes up.

I finished up my Christmas shopping today-had to pick up a secret Santa gift for the office party.

I've picked up the apartment, rearranged the living room and am now in the process of setting up the tree/decorating. The cat is trying to help. *glares at cat*

Later tonight while I am watching my DVD of It's a Wonderful Life I will finish up my Christmas cards and get them in the mail Monday at work.

This happened while I was shopping:

Badly.

Lovely Sony Vaio.

I need to buy a new laptop. This one has served it's purpose but I am getting to the point where I need a new one.

I was thinking of another ThinkPad since I love this one but stumbled across the computer above.

I will probably use the monies that the Federal Goobermint is so nicely *cough*HA*cough* giving me as a majority of the cost. I am looking to spend about a grand.

Help me oh flist please. Recommend a laptop to me.

Important things-good processor speed, at least 1MB of RAM, preferably 2. At least 160GB hard drive. Would be nice to be blue tooth capable. I don't do gaming on this but I do like to obtain TV shows to store and watch. Would need a DVD/RW drive.

I am not fond of Dell, Gateway and have never used a MAC-nothing against them but I am a PC girl all the way. Lenovo, Toshiba, Sony and HP are all brands I am familiar with and would trust. I know nothing about off brands like Acer so any personal experience is desired.

*yawn*

I got up early both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings to catch the Red Sox opening games. (and yes I consider 3 am early) Consequently I have been going to be around 9 and sleeping straight through. I am up past my bedtime...

Take this test!

No bones about it, you're an intelligent, playful Pug. Witty and charming, you're a lot of dog wrapped in a small package. People just love you — a wonderful approachability and sense of humor put you at the top of everyone's list. And because you're smart and quick-witted, you attract a crowd wherever you go. (Have you ever considered running for office or starting a company? You've got the charisma for either.) But that doesn't mean you can't be a little naughty or mischievous when opportunity knocks — you've definitely got a nose for fun! A happy, optimistic breed, you're admired and respected by all. Woof!

On the brink

of a second World Series in 4 years, I find myself a bit nostalgic.

I know I don't post much about my passion for the Red Sox here. I have [info]redsox for that.

But I was looking back and came across these links.

This one was from October of 2003. we had just lost game seven of the ALCS to the Yankees. That post summed up my life as a Red Sox fan up to that point. Bittersweet yet still full of hope.

Then a year later, there is this. For the first time in a long time, I actually felt hope. Hope that this was THE YEAR. The year we could tell Dan Shanessy that he was full of shit and to stop inventing that farking curse. The year we could finally say we were WS champs. The year thousands or even millions of fans could go to a loved ones grave and rejoice with their loved one that the Sox finally won. And you all know that it was the year.

This year wasn't a lot different. We had a 14 1/2 game at one point that dwindled to a 2 game lead. We ended up winning the divison title but I still couldn't rest easy. I knew we could handle the Angels since we have had their number for a few years now. Cleveland scared the shit out of me and I was almost proven right. Luckily some of that 2004 ALCS mojo was still around.

The team still isn't making it easy. The first game was great, once we had that 7 run 7th inning. The second game was a nail biter right down to the last out but once again we prevailed. Last night was also a nail biter, despite that 6 run lead we had for a few innings. For as a Red Sox fan knows, anything can happen and things can go tits up in a matter of a few swings.

Tonight is no sure thing, despite the three game lead. No three game lead is safe, as we have proven twice already. All it will take is a few lucky bounces their way and BLAM. But you know what? I have faith.

I believe.

See y'all on the flip side.

So this morning didn't start very well

I decided to do a proper breakfast of bacon, pancakes, OJ and milk.

Got the oven preheated, pan covered with aluminum foil and bacon spread out for cooking.

While the bacon was cooking, mixed up the pancake batter and started cooking. Made a pitcher of Pineapple Orange juice.

Finished up with the pancakes and by that time, the bacon was ready.

I took it out of the oven and put in on paper towels to drain. Almost immediately. the smoke detector started blatting obnoxiously loud. I tried hitting the reset button (after climbing cautiously onto a chair but that didn't work. So I flung open the patio door and ran to the stove to turn on the hood fan. Luckily that worked. note to self, use the fan whenever cooking anything, just in case.

So as the bacon was draining and my heart rate was settling down, I finished cleaning stuff up. (I had previously buttered and brown sugared the pancakes). I was putting the lid on the container I keep the brown sugar in when BAM!! The container skidded across the breakfast bar and dropped to the floor, spilling brown sugar all over the floor.

*sigh*

Brown sugar is hard to clean up from the carpet. I swept up what I could, ate breakfast and then attacked it with a bucket of water, sponges and paper towels. I have to buy a vacumm cleaner anyway, I might as well see if I can get one that steam cleans as well. I am sure this is not going to be the last time I do something stupid.

Remind me the next time I want to do something like this to not do it. It would be easier in the long run to visit IHOP.
